“Did you put the note on the fridge?” Maya asked, setting a mug near the sink.
“I did,” Ron said. “But I wrote it in blue marker, and now I can’t tell if it’s readable.”
“If we can read it, it’s readable,” she replied. “What did you write?”
“To restock the cabinet: bandages, wipes, and those small packets you like.”
Maya nodded. “Add scissors. The last pair vanished again.”
Ron laughed softly. “Everything vanishes in this house. Socks, scissors, pens.”
“Not the pens,” Maya said. “Those migrate to your desk.”
“Fair point,” Ron answered. “Also, your mom called. She wants us to check the smoke alarm.”
“That’s sensible,” Maya said. “While we’re at it, we should update the contact list.”
“I’ll print it,” Ron replied. “We can keep a copy by the phone and one in the drawer.”
“Good,” Maya said. “Small steps, calm plans.”

“I left the checklist on the counter,” Devon said, lowering his voice as the kettle started to hum.
“The one with the pantry items?” Leila asked. She slid a bowl into the cabinet and paused to listen.
“Yes, and the reminder to replace the batteries,” Devon replied. “I wrote it neatly this time.”
Leila smiled. “Neatly is good. Last week your handwriting looked like it was done on a moving bus.”
“That’s accurate,” Devon admitted. “I was holding the paper with one hand and a grocery bag with the other.”
“We can simplify,” Leila said. “One page for the house, one page for the car.”
“And one for my backpack,” Devon added. “I keep forgetting the small things.”
“Small things matter,” Leila replied. “A spare mask, a few wipes, a notepad, a pen that actually works.”
Devon leaned against the table. “I also want a tiny flashlight. Not for drama, just for practicality.”
“Agreed,” Leila said. “And a card with phone numbers, in case the phone is being stubborn.”
“I’ll type it,” Devon said. “You double-check the names so I don’t miss anyone.”
Leila nodded. “Deal. Also, remind me to water the plant by the window. It looks thirsty.”
Devon glanced over. “It does. Let’s do that after tea.”
“After tea,” Leila repeated. “Calm first, then tasks.”
Devon laughed quietly. “That should be on a poster.”
“Write it on your neat checklist,” Leila said. “Right under ‘batteries.’”
Devon picked up the pen. “Done. And tomorrow, we’ll review the list again, just to keep it current.”
“Perfect,” Leila said. “Short, steady habits. That’s how we keep things manageable.”
“And we can ask Sam what he keeps in his drawer,” Devon added. “He always has a good system.”
“He does,” Leila agreed. “But he also labels everything, which might be a bit much for us.”
“Maybe just label the important parts,” Devon said. “Like the drawer with tape and scissors.”
“Yes,” Leila replied. “Because scissors always disappear.”
Devon looked around. “Speaking of which, I saw them near the mail yesterday.”
“Then that’s where they’ll live until we give them a home,” Leila said. “Let’s pick a spot and keep it consistent.”
“Top right drawer,” Devon answered. “I’ll clear it out tonight.”
“Thank you,” Leila said. “That will make the next week feel easier.”
