I mentioned to my friend that I finally finished that novel she loaned me last spring. She was surprised I held onto it that long but I told her I just get into these slow reading rhythms where I only pick up a chapter every few days. She laughed and said she does the same thing with non-fiction. We started talking about how hard it is to stay consistent with any hobby when work gets busy. I agreed and said I have been trying to practice guitar for at least ten minutes a day just to keep my fingers from getting rusty. She thought that was a good approach. Then we started comparing notes on which podcasts we have been listening to during commutes. She recommended a true crime series that apparently has a really unexpected twist in the third episode. I told her I would give it a try this weekend. We also talked about how we both prefer listening to something rather than music when we are doing chores around the house. She said she finds that spoken word helps her focus better than instrumental music. I nodded and said I feel the same way especially when I am cooking or organizing closets. We ended up chatting for almost an hour about nothing in particular but it felt good to just catch up without any agenda. I realized I need to do that more often.

So my neighbor asked me if I could water her plants while she is away for a week. I said sure because honestly it is just a few pots on her front porch and I walk past them every morning anyway. She showed me which ones need more sun and which ones like shade. I told her not to worry and that I would send her a photo every few days so she could see they are doing fine. She laughed and said that was more than she expected. We ended up talking about her trip and she said she was mostly looking forward to sleeping in and not having to check email. I told her I completely understood that feeling. She also mentioned she was bringing a small sketchbook because she wants to get back into drawing landscapes. I thought that was a nice idea and said I should probably do something similar instead of just scrolling on my phone. She agreed and said even fifteen minutes of something creative changes her whole mood. I told her I might try that with writing instead of drawing. She said any creative outlet works as long as it is not tied to work. We both laughed at that. I told her to enjoy her trip and that the plants would be in good hands. She thanked me and said she would bring back a souvenir from the local market which I thought was really thoughtful. I told her she did not need to but she insisted. I am honestly looking forward to the quiet mornings on her porch while she is gone. It is a nice little routine to borrow for a week.
