I think the raised bed approach works best for the space you described. We used untreated cedar planks about 12 inches tall and filled them with a blend of compost topsoil and peat moss. The drainage has been much better than our old in-ground rows. For spring planting we are doing tomatoes peppers cucumbers and some bush beans. I would suggest adding a drip irrigation kit on a timer because hand watering gets tedious quickly. Mulching with straw helps retain moisture and keeps the soil temperature steady. We also put up a simple trellis for the cucumbers and pole beans which saves space. If you want to start small just build one bed this season and see how the soil settles before expanding. For the trail you asked about I recommend starting around 6 AM to avoid the midday heat. The full loop is about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain so plan for 4 to 5 hours with breaks. Bring at least two liters of water per person and pack trail mix or energy bars for snacks. The section near the creek crossing can be slippery after rain so hiking poles are helpful there. I usually wear trail runners instead of boots on this terrain since they are lighter and dry faster. There is a nice viewpoint about halfway where you can stop for photos. Check the weather before you go because afternoon storms are common this time of year. If you want company I am free next Saturday and could join. Let me know about carpooling since parking fills up quickly on weekends.
