Honestly I think the best way to handle the garden beds this year is to just go with raised beds and not overthink it. My neighbor built his out of cedar last spring and they held up really well through all that rain. I finally got around to pulling the old fence boards out from behind the shed and I think I have enough wood to frame at least two decent sized beds. I was going to go with a more complicated layout but after talking to a few people at the hardware store they all said keep it simple and don't overcrowd. The soil mix they recommended was equal parts topsoil compost and perlite which makes sense for drainage. I started my seeds indoors about three weeks ago and they are coming up fine but I need to get them hardened off before the nights get too cold. My biggest concern is the deer that wander through the backyard but I found a liquid fence product that seems to work if you reapply after rain. The neighbor said he just uses a row cover until the plants get established and that seems to work for him. I also picked up a soaker hose on clearance so I can set up a timer and not have to remember to water every day. I think I will plant tomatoes along the back edge and then peppers and herbs in the front rows. This is the first year I am not going to bother with corn because it takes up too much space for what you get back. I might try a few cucumbers on a trellis along the side. I also want to try a small patch of carrots and beets because they store well and the kids actually eat them if I roast them with a little olive oil and salt. I think the key is just getting the soil right and then staying on top of the weeds early so they don't take over. I am hoping to have everything planted by the second week of May and then just maintain from there. S03tY4v5rzM4

I actually tried making sourdough from scratch last week and it came out better than I expected. I used a starter that my cousin gave me and it was really active. The first loaf was a little dense but the second one had a nice open crumb and the crust was perfect. I think the key was letting it cold ferment in the fridge overnight and then baking it in a dutch oven at a high temperature. I used a mix of bread flour and whole wheat and added a little bit of honey to the dough. My kids ate it with butter and jam and did not complain so I call that a win. My sister has been asking me for the recipe so I need to write it down and send it to her. I also tried making a simple focaccia with rosemary and sea salt on top and that was even easier. I am not sure why I waited so long to try baking bread at home. It is actually pretty forgiving once you get the hydration right. I think I will try a cinnamon swirl loaf next weekend. The whole process is very relaxing and the house smells amazing while it bakes. I have been watching a few videos online and reading tips in a baking group and everyone says the same thing which is that patience and temperature control matter more than having fancy equipment.
